JPG to STL — photos into printable mesh drafts

Need a JPG to STL converter for a phone photo or camera JPEG? PhotoSTL turns one JPG into an AI image to 3D draft, then exports STL / 3MF in millimeters — not a brightness heightmap plaque. 30 free credits (≈3 drafts) when you sign in (Google or magic link).

What JPG means for AI reconstruction

JPG (JPEG) is lossy. Compression removes high-frequency detail and can leave block edges around hard outlines. Heightmap tools mostly care about overall brightness. AI image to 3D also reads edges and surfaces — so ringing and chroma noise can show up as false geometry. If you still have the original, re-save at higher quality or switch to PNG before you convert.

JPG tips that actually help

How JPG → STL works here

  1. Sign in on photostl.com for free trial credits.
  2. Upload your JPG and pick a print recipe.
  3. Generate (~30 seconds typical), orbit the mesh, download STL or 3MF.
  4. Finish walls and supports in your slicer before printing.

FAQ

Can I convert a JPG to STL for 3D printing?

Yes. On photostl.com upload a JPG, pick a print recipe (start with general object), generate an image to 3D draft, then download STL or 3MF in millimeters. 30 free credits (≈3 drafts) when you sign in (Google or magic link).

Is JPG to STL the same as a heightmap relief?

Not on PhotoSTL. Heightmap tools map JPG brightness to Z height for a flat relief. We run single-image AI reconstruction so you get a mesh object draft you can orbit — then export STL/3MF. See AI vs heightmap for the method split.

Why does my JPG to STL look noisy or blobby?

Heavy JPEG compression creates edge ringing that the model can treat as geometry. Re-export from a cleaner master at reasonable quality, crop tightly, and use even lighting. Prefer PNG when you still have a lossless source.

What recipe should I use for a JPG photo?

General object for most subjects; pet bust for animal portraits; product prop for e-commerce shots; miniature for character photos. All recipes accept JPG and share the same STL/3MF export path.
